Development of the kNN method for Great Lakes Region forests will continue. The emphasis in the near future will be on testing the effect of larger field data set ( two years of FIA data) and some new features such as a geographical search radius. Long term plans include moving from using all the subplots to using whole FIA plots as one unit. The major variables studied will continue to be volume, basal area and cover type. The goal is to produce thematic maps for these variables with an increasing level of accuracy. Additionally, we will be examining survey design options that would facilitate detailed cover type estimation on a local basis.
The kNN programming package will also be refined to improve its utility for a wide range of uses.
